Which excavator: mini, wheeled or crawler

Choosing an excavator comes down to four questions: how deep you dig, how much room you have, what ground the machine moves on and how much material you move.

Mini, wheeled or crawler?

  • The mini excavator fits through narrow gates, does not damage paving and is the cheapest; it is not for great depths or large volumes.
  • The wheeled excavator drives itself on the road and leaves no marks on asphalt; it suits jobs spread over several spots.
  • The crawler excavator is stable on soft and sloping ground and has the most power; it comes on a trailer.

What about the bulldozer?

If the job is mainly pushing and spreading soil over a large area — platforms, topsoil stripping, farm roads — the Liebherr PR726XL bulldozer does it faster than an excavator. See Land levelling and earthworks.
