Crawler or wheeled excavator: which is better?

Both dig equally well; the difference is in how they move and what ground they work on. In short: tracks for soft ground, slopes and power; wheels for asphalt, towns and frequent moves.

When to choose tracks

  • soft, wet or sloping ground;
  • deep digging: large foundations, basements, deep utilities;
  • demolition and large volumes, where power matters.

From our fleet: Hitachi ZX210-6 (24 t) and Hitachi ZX250LC-7 (31.4 t).

When to choose wheels

  • work in town, on streets and pavements;
  • several nearby job spots with frequent moves;
  • hard ground: asphalt, concrete, crushed stone.

From our fleet: Hitachi ZX170W-6 (19 t).

What about the mini excavator?

For gardens, house foundations and tight spaces, the ZX48U-6 mini excavator (5.1 t, rubber tracks) is usually the cheapest option. See also Which excavator.
