💡 We rent Hitachi excavators — a 5.1 t mini excavator, a 19 t wheeled excavator and 24 t and 31.4 t crawler excavators — and an 18 t Liebherr bulldozer, all with an operator. All machines have an air-conditioned cab and meet the Stage V emission standard.
Crawler excavator (Hitachi ZX210-6, 24 t, or ZX250LC-7, 31.4 t):
- very good stability and traction on soft, uneven or sloping ground;
- large digging depths: 6.67 m and 6.96 m respectively;
- recommended for deep foundations, large earthworks and excavation in difficult ground.
Wheeled excavator (Hitachi ZX170W-6, 19 t):
- moves quickly, including on the road, without a trailer, between nearby work sites;
- does not damage asphalt or paving;
- suited to urban work, utility networks and sites with several locations.
In short: for difficult ground and large volumes, a crawler excavator is recommended; in urban areas, on asphalt or where the machine needs to be moved frequently, a wheeled excavator. For yards with narrow access, the ZX48U-6 mini excavator is usually the right choice. See also the guide crawler or wheeled excavator.
💡 A crawler excavator offers high stability and traction on soft or uneven ground and greater digging depths (up to 6.96 m). A wheeled excavator moves quickly, including on public roads, and is suited to urban work and frequent changes of work site.
The Hitachi ZX48U-6 mini excavator (5.1 t, 29.1 kW, 0.3 m³ bucket, 3.63 m digging depth) is the right choice for:
- foundations for single-storey or two-storey houses and outbuildings;
- utility trenches: water, gas, sewerage, cables;
- work in confined spaces — yards, gardens, between existing buildings;
- landscaping, small swimming pools and topsoil stripping on small areas.
The machine passes through a gate of approximately 2 m and works efficiently in tight spaces. Its indicative output is 40–70 m³ per day, so a typical house foundation is completed in 2–3 days.
When a larger machine is needed: for excavation deeper than 2.5 m, volumes above 300 m³, or hard clay or compacted gravel, we recommend an excavator of 19 t or more. The mini excavator rate starts from RON 800/day, with operator.
💡 The Hitachi ZX48U-6 mini excavator (5.1 t, 0.3 m³ bucket, 3.63 m digging depth) is suited to confined spaces: house foundations, utility trenches, work in yards and gardens where a larger machine has no access.
The maximum digging depth varies from model to model:
- Hitachi ZX48U-6 mini excavator: 3.63 m
- Hitachi ZX170W-6 wheeled excavator: 5.83 m
- Hitachi ZX210-6 crawler excavator: 6.67 m
- Hitachi ZX250LC-7 crawler excavator: 6.96 m
Indicative recommendations:
- house foundation without a basement (1–1.5 m) — the mini excavator is sufficient;
- house with a basement (2.5–3.5 m) — the 19 t excavator;
- tanks, deep pits, industrial building foundations or retaining walls — the 24–31 t crawler excavators.
The values given are the maximum depths from the manufacturer’s documentation, with the arm fully extended. In practice, for deep excavation the working radius, the slope of the excavation (pit walls are not dug vertically) and the location of spoil storage also matter. Full specifications are available on each machine page.
💡 It depends on the model: the ZX48U-6 mini excavator digs up to 3.63 m, the ZX170W-6 wheeled excavator up to 5.83 m, and the crawler excavators up to 6.67 m (ZX210-6) and 6.96 m (ZX250LC-7).
With an excavator and the right attachment, most earthworks can be carried out:
- excavation for foundations, basements and tanks — with the standard bucket;
- trenches for water, sewerage, gas and cables — with the narrow bucket, at the required width;
- demolition and breaking concrete or rock — with the hydraulic breaker;
- levelling and sloping — with the grading bucket;
- holes for posts and fences — with the auger;
- loading and handling of soil, rubble and materials — with the bucket or the grapple;
- topsoil stripping and site preparation.
Attachments are selected when booking, from RON 45/day (buckets) to RON 180/day (hydraulic breaker). Each machine page includes the list “Work that can be carried out” and cost examples. For levelling large areas, a bulldozer is usually more efficient than an excavator.
💡 Depending on the attachment: excavation for foundations and trenches, demolition (with a hydraulic breaker), levelling and sloping, drilling (with an auger), material loading and topsoil stripping. The list of possible work is shown on each machine page.
Yes. All machines in the fleet — the mini excavator, the crawler and wheeled excavators and the bulldozer — have an enclosed, air-conditioned cab.
This directly affects the pace of the work:
- In summer, the operator can work without long breaks due to high temperatures, and the work progresses steadily.
- In winter, the heated cab allows safe work at low temperatures.
- Dust and noise are largely kept out, which keeps the operator focused throughout the day.
For you, this means a full 8-hour working day, whatever the season.
💡 Yes. All machines in the fleet have an enclosed, air-conditioned cab for the operator’s comfort and safety in every season.
The Liebherr PR726XL bulldozer (18 t, 125 kW, air-conditioned cab) is designed for heavy surface earthworks:
- levelling and shaping the ground;
- pushing and spreading soil, backfilling;
- stripping the topsoil before construction;
- preparing platforms for houses, industrial buildings, car parks or access roads;
- sloping and profiling embankments.
On large areas, a bulldozer is several times more productive than an excavator, as it works continuously by pushing. For excavation in depth (foundations, trenches) an excavator is required.
The rate starts from RON 2,500/day with operator, excluding VAT, for a minimum of 10 days. See also the guide the cost of levelling land.
💡 The Liebherr PR726XL bulldozer (18 t, 125 kW) is designed for earthworks: levelling, pushing and spreading soil, topsoil stripping, sloping and preparing platforms for buildings or roads.
The choice of machine depends on three factors: foundation depth, site access and volume of soil.
Indicative recommendation
| Type of work | Recommended machine | Digging depth | Rate/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single or two-storey house foundation, narrow access | Hitachi ZX48U-6 mini excavator (5.1 t) | 3.63 m | RON 800 |
| Foundation with basement, open site | Hitachi ZX170W-6 wheeled (19 t) | 5.83 m | RON 1,200 |
| Deep foundation, large volume | Hitachi ZX210-6 (24 t) | 6.67 m | RON 2,200 |
When the mini excavator is sufficient
The 5-tonne mini excavator passes through a 2 m gate, does not damage yard paving and completes a house foundation in 2–3 days. It is the right machine for most individual homes.
When a larger machine is needed
We recommend a machine of 19 tonnes or more if the excavation is deeper than 2.5 m, the volume of soil exceeds 300 m³, the ground is hard clay or compacted gravel, or the soil must be loaded directly into a dump truck.
For an exact recommendation, contact us on +40 744 66 77 33 with the foundation dimensions.
💡 For a single-storey or two-storey house, the 5.1 t mini excavator, with a digging depth of up to 3.63 m, is usually sufficient. For a basement or foundations deeper than 2.5 m, we recommend a 19–24 t excavator.
Levelling involves pushing and evening out soil at the surface, not digging in depth; for this reason the right machine is a bulldozer, not an excavator.
Bulldozer or excavator?
| Work | Machine | Rate/day |
|---|---|---|
| Levelling, pushing soil, topsoil stripping | Liebherr PR726XL bulldozer (18 t, 125 kW) | RON 2,500 |
| Deep excavation, trenches, foundations | Hitachi excavator | RON 800–2,400 |
| Fine levelling on small areas | Mini excavator with grading bucket | RON 800 + RON 60 attachment |
Typical bulldozer work
- Preparing land for construction.
- Stripping the topsoil before foundations.
- Levelling platforms for industrial buildings or car parks.
- Pushing and compacting fill material.
On large areas, a bulldozer is several times more productive than an excavator, as it works continuously by pushing.
💡 A bulldozer is used for levelling land. The 18 t Liebherr PR726XL bulldozer costs RON 2,500/day with operator, excluding VAT, and is suited to platforms, topsoil stripping and pushing soil.
The right attachment can significantly shorten the work. Attachments are rented separately, at a daily rate.
| Attachment | Use | Rate/day |
|---|---|---|
| Standard bucket | General excavation, loading soil | RON 45 |
| Narrow trenching bucket | Trenches for pipes, cables, drainage | RON 45 |
| Grading bucket | Cleaning banks, levelling slopes, finishing | RON 60 |
| Hydraulic breaker | Demolition, breaking concrete and rock | RON 180 |
| Hydraulic auger | Holes for posts, fences, planting | RON 150 |
| Grapple | Handling rubble, stumps and bulk materials | RON 120 |
Recommendations
- Digging soil → standard bucket.
- Laying pipes or cables → narrow bucket, for a trench of the exact width.
- Concrete, masonry or rock → hydraulic breaker.
- Fence posts → auger: dozens of holes per day, all at the same depth.
Attachments are selected directly when booking, and the price is added to the total automatically.
💡 The standard bucket covers most excavation. The narrow bucket is used for trenches, the hydraulic breaker for demolition, the auger for post holes, the grading bucket for embankments and the grapple for handling materials.
